What is the Sill Level

The horizontal beam-like member provided at the windows’ base is known as the sill, and the level where the sill is provided is called the sill level. It is also referred to as the window sill or sill band.

Sill is mostly constructed using Reinforced Cement concretePlain Cement Concretewoodmortar or steel.

The sill level’s width is mostly kept equal to or greater than the brickwork’s width below the sill level. The length of the sill is kept similar to that of the window.

The Sill Height

The height between the floor level and the base of the window is known as sill height.

Typically, to ensure privacy, the sill height in bedrooms and bathrooms is kept equal to or greater than 1.1 Meters (3.5 feet) from the floor level

The sill height for the living rooms and the standard rooms are kept in the range of 600-650mm from the floor level.

Main Purposes of Sill Level

The primary purpose of providing the sill level are as follows:

  1. Sill level provide an additional support to the window frame and the entire window.
  2. Sill level delivers a smooth finished surface to the window.
  3. Sill level prevent the infiltration of moisture, penetration as well the passage of water.
  4. In case the stand is provided, the sill level offers additional support to the stand.

Effects Due to the Absence of Sill

Some effects because of the absence of the sill level are:

  • Cracks development in the wall along the baseline of the window due to loading.
  • Infiltrating of the moisture.
