These are building materials required for any construction project whether it is home or for commercial purpose. We have a small list here of common construction materials and their prices; cement, steel, sand, hoop iron, binding wires, coarse aggregates, fine aggregates, bricks, blocks etc.

  1. Cement:

Cement is very important building material among other in construction industry. It is used in many construction components like plain cement concrete, reinforced cement concrete, mortar, plaster, grouts, paints and in pre-cast elements. It has an ability to hold the structure together.

Prices vary with the brands

Cement Price: Ksh. 580-740 per 50 kg bag.

  1. Steel:

Steel bars are high-strength reinforcement bars having a tough outer core and a soft inner core. Steel is a high-strength material compared to concrete. The reinforcing steel is strong in tension as well in compression. It plays an important role in giving strength to structure in construction project.

Steel Price:

 Ksh. 470 for D8.

Ksh. 640 for D10

Ksh. 960 for D12

  1. Sand /River sand:

Generally, sand is extracted from river bed and cleaned to be used construction. Sand is used to strength, bulk and other properties to construction materials like asphalt and concrete. Sand is also used as a decorative material in landscaping. Some types of sand are used in the manufacture of glass and as a molding material for metal casting.

Sand Price:  Ksh. 1300 to 1800 Per Ton.

  1. Binding Wires:

Binding wires are the thin iron steel wire that used to bind or tight the steel bars and help in providing proper structure to the construction due to the stability of the steel bars.

Binding Wire Price: 3200. per roll.

  1. Hoop Iron

Hoop irons are used to provide additional strength in masonry work/building The hoop iron has flat strapping of different thicknesses and can be galvanized or stainless steel. The sizes sold are as long as a roll with a 20mm width and 1mm in thickness. Also used to attach roofing trusses.

Hoop iron cost Ksh. 2700 per roll

  1. Coarse Aggregates (kokoto)

Coarse aggregate extracted by breaking from rocks using explosives & crushed into pieces using machines & coarse aggregate sizes 6mm, 12mm, 20mm, 40mm, 60mm are divided using big sieves in machines & coarse aggregate like 6,12,20mm is used to mix in concrete for construction purposes & 40mm is used for railroads. The coarse aggregate provides main structure to concrete and load-bearing ingredient of the concrete.

Coarse Aggregates Price: KES. 900 to 1300 per ton.

  1. Bricks/Machine cut

Bricks and Blocks are mainly used for building walls. Bricks come in various shapes, sizes and strength based on different construction requirements. Nowadays, machine cut are commonly used in urban areas and bricks are common in rural projects.

Bricks: Ksh. 10 to 20 per piece.

Machine cut: Ksh. 40 to 60 per piece.

Foundation quarry stones Ksh.35-45 per ft.

These prices  vary from one location to another but majorly reflects cost as sold by different small-scale hardware shops and suppliers in Kenya.
