A broken or faulty thermistor could be the cause of your window air conditioner running even when it is turned off. The best approach is to open your air conditioning unit and inspect the sensor to see if it is broken or disconnected.

If it is, you should replace it with a new one. To change your thermistor, turn off the power supply to your window air conditioner. Next, remove the front panel and any screws or clips that secure the sensor. Make sure you disconnect the wires leading to it and remove them from their places.

Connect the new thermistor in place of the old one and secure all wires in their proper places. Replace all the parts that were removed earlier and restart your unit.

However, if your air conditioner is hardwired, consult an expert about replacing your thermistor for you because it could blow a circuit or cause shock or fire by doing this work yourself. The next step is to clean your air conditioner filter for it to function properly all the time.

Before you do this, make sure to switch off your unit and unplug it from the power source. Then, place the handle of a broom down and a plastic bag over the intake grill of your air conditioning unit. Place the air conditioning filter and blow out any dust or debris trapped inside it.

After 15-20 minutes, remove the cover and remove any trash from within your unit. Now you can use a vacuum cleaner to clean up any small pieces that may have fallen on its floor grille or which you may not have seen before because of their position and size.

Remember to empty the accumulated dust and debris from your air conditioner and clean its grill thoroughly to avoid these problems in the future.
