How Wide Should Curtains Be For A 48-Inch Window?
When it comes to choosing curtains for a window, there are a few things to take into consideration. First, the width of the window. Then, the style of the curtains. Finally, the material of the curtains.
Here’s a guide to help you choose the right width and style of curtains for a 48-inch window. When it comes to curtains for a window, the width of the window is the most important factor.
If the window is too wide, the curtains will billow in the wind and look sloppy. If the window is too narrow, the curtains will be too close to the window, and you’ll be unable to see out.
Remember that the width measurement is flat. There will be no fullness or draping if you hang a 48-inch panel on a 48-inch window. Curtainshop.com recommends that finished curtains be twice the width of the window, so if your window is 36 inches wide, you’ll need panels that are at least 72 inches across.
We recommend adding two inches to that width measurement. The width of your curtains should be no less than two inches wider than the window’s width, and no more than three inches wider, to allow for a full drape.
To determine the length of your curtains, start by measuring the length of each end along the floor. Add one inch to this measurement and add that to your window’s length, which will be double what you measure on the floor.
Then measure off another inch of additional length from each end. When you iron out your two-inch hem, it will be finished and ready for hanging.
The width of your curtains should be no less than two inches wider than the window’s width, and no more than three inches wider, to allow for a full drape.
- Measure the length of your window from top to bottom in raw fabric. Do not include any extra fabric for the sides or bottom hem. For example, if you have a 60″ wide window, make a measurement of 60″ across it in raw fabric – do not include extra fabric at the top or bottom to be hemmed onto the casing.

- Divide these two measurements by two, to get a length measurement that is equal to your finished cushion width (2xH). For a 60″ long window, divide by 2 and you get 16 1/2″.
- Divide this length measurement in half, again getting a measurement equal to your curtain rod width (H) from the curtain shop’s chart above (17 1/2″ for 6′ rods).
How Do You Cover A Window Without Curtains?
You can block the view by placing household objects in front of the window, or you can make your own covering out of film or glass paint. If you want a more permanent solution, you can install blinds, shades, or shutters.
Whatever you choose, your home will look fantastic once you add your personal touch. In addition, adding these window coverings will help keep your home energy efficient. Outdoor drapes can be hung on a window without curtains.
This may be an option if you have a place in the house that needs a lot of light but work well with the less-is-more style. This can also be done in a bathroom, bedroom, or similar space. Just make sure you don’t let any sunlight shine through the drape.
If you decide to make your own covering, you’ll need glass paint (this also works for mirrors as well as windows), a brush, newspaper or napkins, and fabric. Brush on one coat of the paint, let it dry for 24 hours, and then brush again.
Let this coat dry for 24 hours before brushing on another coat. To create a more opaque coverage, apply two coats of paint. Newspaper or napkins can be used under all the layers to help keep them from melting when the paint does start to soften.
