What Is Liquid Wood?

Liquid wood is a bioplastic composite made from lignin, cellulose, and plant fibers such as flax or hemp.

It was developed by German company TECNARO in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology.

The material has properties similar to wood and can be processed like a thermoplastic polymer.

It is 100% biodegradable and is classified as a biopolymer, composite and natural engineered wood.

The material is similar to wood as it is made of the same three natural polymeric substances: cellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses. Liquid wood is trade name ARBOFORM or ARBOBLEND.

It inherits some characteristics from wood, such as thermal and electrical insulation, acoustic properties and color and smell. It is a mixture of “unsorted” fibers, and is an isotropic material unlike natural wood.

What Is Liquid Wood Used For?

LiquidWood is a product that effectively strengthens and restores wood by penetrating the fibers and hardening them permanently.

It can be used for both structural and decorative purposes, both indoors and outdoors, and on a variety of wooden surfaces including buildings, windows, columns, beams, decks, boats, furniture, artwork, and other architectural elements.

What Are The Benefits Of Liquid Wood?

LiquidWood is an easy-to-use consolidant for wood that produces long-lasting results. Its low viscosity allows for deep penetration and saturation of damaged fibers, eliminating the need for removal of the affected areas.

With LiquidWood, damaged wood can be restored to a strong, durable, and weather/insect-resistant state.

Additionally, it contains no water or solvents, resulting in no shrinkage and strong adhesion.

It has a low odor and produces little to no VOCs, making it safe for any environment. Treated wood hardens quickly and can be worked on as if it were new wood.

How Is Liquid Wood Made?

Raw Arboform is a dark brown, pebble-like material that is processed using equipment similar to traditional plastic.

The pellets are heated until they melt, then they are pressurized and molded into a desired shape, such as a figurine.

Is Liquid Wood Biodegradable?

Arboform is a type of bio-polymer material made up of lignin, natural fibers, and other bio-based additives. It is fully biodegradable and is known as “liquid wood.”

Its widespread acceptance in industry is dependent on its thermo-mechanical stability, which is a critical quality requirement for its use in engineering applications.

Who Invented Liquidwood?

The results of tests using microindentation and differential calorimetry have not yet been released.
