Can You Replace A Compressor In A Window Air Conditioner?

Yes. Compressors break about once every 20 years for most homeowners. If this happens to you, there are many maintenance tips you can do such as check the refrigerant level, clean the condenser coils, and clean the filter.

However, if you’re not an expert with these jobs and they don’t work, then it’s better to hire a technician to perform these tasks for you. Air conditioning repair companies also provide installation services for window air conditioners.

For instance, if your window air conditioner is not working properly or begins to overheat because of a faulty compressor, it is best that you hire them to replace the damaged part before it becomes worse and causes other components in your unit to fail completely.

Another reason why you should consider hiring an air conditioning repair company is that they specialize in working with condenser units, which are the parts that make your unit cool. While it’s more economical on the pocketbook to do it yourself, there are many things you need to know before attempting to replace the part yourself.

If your compressor does need to be replaced and costs about $350 new or less used at a retail store (such as on eBay or Craigslist), then you should call your local air conditioning repair company for advice and assistance before doing anything else.

In many cases, it could be a much better idea if they install new windows and air conditioners instead of repairing your unit. The price of new units is much cheaper than repairing any unit that’s damaged. In addition, you won’t have to pay to do the repairs yourself if your unit is not working correctly.

It’s best that you contact an HVAC technician before replacing any component in your window air conditioner.

How many slopes Should A Window Air Conditioner Have?

To drain properly, a typical window air conditioner requires only a very slight slope, about 1/2-inch from the interior face to the exterior face.

If you are using a plastic drain pan, there is a drain hole in the center that can be attached to the window with a suction cup or silicone and that will prevent water from pooling on the floor.

If your air conditioner does not have this drain hole, then you should install one or have your window unit serviced by a technician who specializes in window units. You should also know that many experts do not recommend soft plastic drainage pans because they will trap moisture against the evaporator coils inside your room.

When it’s hot outside, these coils can become incredibly hot and overheat much more quickly than if they were dry. If your air conditioner has a single slope unit that is installed in an older home with standard-sized windows, then you should have your unit installed with a slight slope that’s about 1/4-inch. This will ensure proper drainage.

If you choose to install the drain pan, it must be installed dry. That means no water drains into it and no condensation should drip down into the pan. If you notice water pooling in the pan even after trying to place the pan in a spot where there’s already a slight slope, then you’ll need to have your air conditioner serviced or replaced with a unit that drains properly.

If you notice that water is pooling in the pan and making its way down to the evaporator coils, then there’s a good chance you’re going to have a musty odor in your room and even mold growth.

If water does pool up in your drain pan, then it can also seep into any electrical components of your air conditioner and cause damage.
